The most versatile firearm available is the shotgun. In fact, shotguns can be used for almost everything, from deer to dove and ducks to squirrels. They can even be used for self-defense. And nothing really must be changed to do all this. Sure, folks can swap barrels, chokes and magazine capacity for specific purposes, but all a person really needs for most home defense and field situations is a 12-gauge shotgun with a modified choke. Here are six, all-around shotguns folks should consider that won’t put a crimp in the wallet. And we’re not just talking about pump-action shotguns.

CZ 712 G3

An upgrade from the 712 G2, the G3 actually received some improvements. CZ kept the gas-operated action that provides fast cycling and reduced recoil. However, the 712 G3 comes with two load-specific pistons. One is for lighter loads, in the 1,200 to 1,300 fps range, while the second handles magnum loads. CZ also re-engineered the receiver to provide better aesthetics and hand fit. The chrome-lined barrel holds up to extended use, while providing consistent patterning with the five included chokes, while the matte black on the receiver and barrel keeps it from shining. CZ even provided oversize controls, such as bolt handle and release for easier use when wearing gloves. The shotgun is available with a black synthetic stock for the same price and a camo version for just a little bit more.
