Turkey Hunting

As hunters, we can collect all of the data available to us. But, the decisions that we make with that data are what is important. I have a belief when it comes to tagging turkeys: He or she who can outlast the birds wins. This means when I set my mind to tag a gobbler, I am not leaving the field until a shell is smoking on the ground or legal shooting light is over. To do that, you need physical prowess, mental toughness and food. Here are a few snack items I keep in my vest when the rumbling tummy hits mid-hunt.

Brace yourself: The New Year has dawned and with it will come a plethora of gym marketing, fat loss solicitations, program pitches, and more! It can be overwhelming and without the right team in your corner, may not produce the result you envision. Make no mistake, we want you to move. It’s the whole premise behind #FitToHunt, but what follows in the next few paragraphs will be the difference between another year of regret or truly being prepared for your outdoor adventures.

If you are still under the belief that all you have to do to consistently kill turkeys is find an oak tree in the timber and sit, you may be sitting for a long time. Even when turkey populations were strong in the early to mid 2000s, the physical ability to get up and go, belly crawl or move through the woods with stealth has helped our clients fill a lot of tags. Today with fewer gobblers out there, add good aerobic fitness to the list because to find birds, you are going to put a lot of miles on your boots. Here are a few of our favorite moves we use with clients to prepare for the turkey woods.

Hunting is part of human nature, we are made to be hunters and for this reason, it is no surprise to me when someone who did not grow up hunting in our modern times feels an urge to go into the wilderness, tap into their reptilian brain, and quench the thirst for hunting.

After chasing turkeys across two different states the last six weeks, I’m tired. I bet you are as too. It was a great season that resulted in seeing my kids tag their first birds, me tagging my first Rio Grande turkey in Texas and falling more in love with the pursuit of these magical birds.
