I believe they are talking about thermal vision scopes for hunting at night? They are a lot better than using a light.

Thermals when the sun/heat pulls up current (your scent) and sun sets/heat pulls down currents (your scent)

Honestly the best way to understand them is by experimentation. But I will try and explain a little. So you go out in the evening at 3:00 pm and set up on a west facing ridge because you have a good wind. It's blowing your scent up and over the top of the ridge. When the sun starts to go down, even though your predominant wind is good, every time the wind dies down as the air temp starts to cool off the thermals are going to drag your scent down the hill. Same thing in the morning. If the predominant wind was pulling your scent down the hill when the sun comes up and starts to warm the air on the hillside every time the wind dies down that warmth is going to drag your scent up the hill no matter what the wind direction is. On really windy days the thermals don't matter to much but on days where you have little to now wind then you need to take in consideration for your thermals and where they will be pulling your scent. I believe the hunting public had a video on thermals from a few years ago that may explain a little better.
Honestly go out in a stand and take some milk weed with you. When the wind is blowing drop some and see where it goes. Then wait for the wind to die and drop a piece. You would be amazed how it moves when it gets into the thermals. It's kinda like an under current of water. Hope this atheist helped out a little.

@John man I know, most positive platform I have ever been on. I got rid of facebook and all the others about 4 years ago now. It was so much hate and negativity on those sites. This one feels like a huge family looking out for one another. Absolutely love it.
