Hi Rick, it sounds like your pup needs a bit of extra training. You should start by teaching him the "come" command. Make sure he knows that if he comes when you call, he will be rewarded. Might try sitting on a log for a while. Be boring to him so that going out and finding squirrels will be more fun.

Might take it out with a finished dog a couple times to show it that you want it to leave. Each dog is different but I have seen it change a dogs mind set by seeing another dog do it.
