I’m fairly new turkey hunter, but had some luck with mouth calling and it’s a good way to pass time driving to camp.

I like the reeds since they’re hands free and no movement really. But I really like the sound of Phelps crystal over slate pot call.

I found a custom call maker I really like. I took a bird with a copper slate call last year with his call. The bird in the pic

Mouth calls, maybe a pot, but I also really enjoy using the wingbone calls I make out the turkeys I kill. The wingbone has a different tone that sometimes is just what seals the deal.

@Craig I am attempting to make one of those. So soon I will add that to my vest

Slate and or glass if they are out of sight. I’ll run a mouth call once I could be busted running a pot and peg.

I prefer mouth calls but recently started using a custom glass call from wood haven. It really seems to fire them up. But still switch back to mouth calls as they close the distance. Because of movement.

@Ricky he has a website and has different woods you can pick from. The pics I took DO NOT do these calls justice and again really super cool guy.

@Cory I just looked at his site, some beautiful calls on there. I emailed him about aluminum and copper calls. I’m gonna get me a couple of them, just not sure which ones I want yet.

I carry all types of calls. Multiple diaphragm calls, slate and glass friction calls and a boxs call. Sometimes turkeys like a certain pitch. I’ve changed calls when the gobblers aren’t gobbling good and have had them get fired up. It’s not the call you like or sound you like, it’s what the gobblers want to hear.

@Tom that is so true and I get hung up on the bow wow that sounds good and then don’t see crap lol.

@Cory Thanks you for sharing the info about the calls. Been emailing back and forth, was really hard to decide. Ended up going with copper and salted maple, aluminum with zebra wood and slate with ambrosia maple. Thanks again.

I use numerous different calls. I have slate and glass pot calls, usually 4 different mouth calls and a box call. I have found that gobblers like a certain pitch. I’ve called and got no response, switched calls and had a gobbler sound off. You can be afraid to change it up. Do what sounds good to them, not you or your hunting partner.
