I'm running heavy (600gn) on a 46@ 26.5" draw longbow for pigs. Wanted to soak up all the energy I could from my setup, but am considering a 550gn build as well. SB two blade BH.

The philosophy with long bow is solid

Still running a hoyt hyperforce one more year. 70lb, 600 grain arrow with single bevel. Oddly enough I find myself mostly experiencing short quartering too shots, I always wish for a broadside but apparently that’s not real life for me here in Michigan. So my setup for me has increased my statistics of what I experienced most of the time. Maybe this year I’ll get a broadside shot, I’m due haha

I had a 80lb Hoyt crx, 650 with grizzly stick 200 grain samurai tuned and had a few good kills and a few major failure on front quarter shots on hog deer alike, I blame it largely on my over confidence in the system, but when it worked it was devastating

  • A.T's avatar

I’ve lost more animals to that samurai than I’ve killed unfortunately

@A.T Thank you. No fires on my island, but things are pretty rough on Maui.

@A.T Yup, I avoid quartering-to no matter my setup, even if it means giving up a shot.

@A.T what is causing the failure? Scapula?

  • A.T's avatar

The t on the scapula, , deer, and the hog shield twice

I also feel like the arrows velocity was causing a lack of penetration, large pin gaps hurting accuracy, just the whole deal was holding me back , nothing against the guys that are having good results with it , just not for me , I set that bow aside and built out something’ much more accurate and forgiving

I still have testing to do at 550 and 525 grain. My accuracy with the 600 is very consistent. But I do believe a bow setup has a perfect sweet spot for the weight. Like draw weight, draw length and power band of the bow. Where the efficiency is best, whether 600 is it or something else.

  • A.T's avatar

    Absolutely.

  • Robert's avatar

Crossbow time for this older man

  • A.T's avatar

I hear that ,! I hope I’m able to do this as long as I can

  • Spencer's avatar

  • Spencer's avatar
