How awesome! Great work! I do war between the states reenactments and I'm a member of the local Sons of Confederate Veterans. I had to stop doing any reenactments because of surgeries 10 years ago. I'm starting to get back into it limited. I'm getting ready to build boxes for my equipment, but I want to shipboard the laps a make them period correct as possible. I've got some tools, but not everything I'd like to have, but will make do with my budget. My son says to just put it together but yet he's building lanterns, chairs, and tables that could be used for that time period lol. It won't be as beautiful as your canoe, that is just spell binding. My son says i carry to much gear when we go camping or hunting. I tell him I'm not in my 20s anymore like him. Lol I told him in my teens and twenties I'd carry a blanket, tarp, fishing pole, and small cooler 😎. Ain't that way nowadays 😅. Keep up the great work friend, can't wait to see what you come up with next.

  • Tom's avatar

@David thanks so much for your kind words. Hope you can get back to what you enjoy. Once in a while some good shop equipment will come available at estate sales or local auctions. May be able to add to your tool collection without spending too much. You can do a lot with a table saw and some imagination. Have fun. Looking forward to your posts.

    Wow this is beautiful!

  • Leif's avatar

My family build cedar strip canoes for several years as a business until the demand got to great for us to keep up with. Yours is beautiful. And they are heavenly to glide through the water with. Very nicely done.

  • Tom's avatar

@Leif thanks so much that means a lot coming from someone that understands the craftsmanship that goes into such a craft.

  • John's avatar

That is really beautiful Tom! How much does your boat weight?

  • Tom's avatar

@John I’ve never put it on a scale but would guess about 75#. About the same as an Old Town Discovery 174 I have.

  • John's avatar

I have a Old Town 175 good boat.

  • John's avatar

Not as heavy as I would have thought.

  • Tom's avatar

@John the wood strips are only 1/4” thick and then it’s fiberglassed both sides.

  • Joe's avatar

That’s a work of art, the story of the wood and how it matured makes it all the better.

  • Benita's avatar

    Beautiful...

  • Ferg's avatar

Dude, that’s a spectacular piece of work. And a very very well thought out present from your wife buddy. Very cool post

  • Tom's avatar

@Ferg thanks man. Hope all is well with you.

  • John's avatar

That is a work of art!

  • Tom's avatar

@John thanks man. I appreciate that. It was a labor of love.

  • John's avatar

You have been blessed with great talent. Nice work!

First big game hunt was woodland caribou and a cow moose in Newfoundland at the age of 41. My son has been raised to respect and appreciate the hunting lifestyle. Cooking game has been the frosting on the hunting cake.
