That’s the fun part of coyote hunting, especially when I hunted in the mountains where I used to live. Calling coyotes but a mountain lion, bobcat or a bear could show up. Never did though but it was still exciting.

Got a call at 6am from our friend telling us they cut lion tracks, and if I wanted to try to get it...to come on. We got dressed for a 6 degree hunt in the mountains. Not too many layers because we’d have to do some walking, but enough to be warm. We loaded up the Ranger, and to the mountains we went. We got to the tracks and released the dogs on the trail. We watched them on GPS for about 30 minutes and they just kept going and going. They made it about 5 canyons away, and were still chasing. We had to get back down the mountain, to another area and try to get up. The Ranger wouldn’t make it in the snow, so we had to go back home and trade it out for the snowmobile. Back to the mountains, and a 20 minute ride up. We arrived to where are friends were and they had taken off already on foot. So we followed their trail...in thigh-deep snow, and finally started hearing the dogs barking. It got closer and closer until it was directly across the ridge. I could hear them but couldn’t see anything yet. Finally, I caught sight of something moving and it was a mountain lion going up a huge tree. The dogs were circling. We yelled out for our friends because we didn’t want to shoot without knowing where they were. They got there and we got repositioned so I could get a shot. Until that day, I had never seen a mountain lion. She stood in the tree peering right at me while I peered back through my scope. With one shot with my .243 she fell from the branch, followed by a downpour of snow from the branches. Somehow, she got up and ran but the dogs were on it and she died just 20 yards away. This was so many firsts wrapped into one experience. Typically, females aren’t the target because harvesting 2 in our unit results in the season getting closed. But I couldn’t let this opportunity pass by. She was around 100 lbs, very mature (our friend estimated around 6 years old), no kittens and had recently killed a fawn. She was the one to get out of the mountains. So excited to harvest my first mountain lion. I will be having her hide tanned and skull beetled. And the meat will be in our freezer. Most people don’t eat them because they are predators, but the meat is very similar to pork, and is quite tasty (once you get over it being a cat!).
