    40 yards with a bow, but with a gun I can shoot at 300 yards comfortably.

  • Hunter's avatar

    60 in perfect conditions and I practice out to 110

  • AJ's avatar

    @John great thoughts, do you archery practice any further than 40 yards?

  • AJ's avatar

    @Hunter what defines perfect, in your opinion?

  • John's avatar

    @AJ yessir, I practice out to about 70 yards.

  • John's avatar

    @AJ when I meant I can shoot comfortably at 300 yards I meant with a gun not a bow.

  • Corydon's avatar

    The furthest I would take a shot at a deer is about 30 any further and I think the deer has to much time to react but I like to practice out to 40 and 50 just cause shooting further makes you hone your skills a little more

  • Hunter's avatar

    @AJ a decent wind so the deer won't here my shot no brush head up and not paying attention 60 is a long shot for a whitetail but I can shot a 3 inch group at 60 and with a fixed blade broadhead I know my arrows will have plenty of penetration

    @John good to know, thanks!

  • AJ's avatar

    @Corydon great point, I also practice further than I'd shoot at one

  • AJ's avatar

    @Hunter good thoughts, thanks man!

    I killed a doe at 62yds. I watched her for over an hour and she was completely oblivious I was there. I practice out to 100yds but 90% of my shots on deer have been 20yds and under.

    48 yards

  • Billy's avatar

    Because that’s the farthest I’ve done lol

  • Bobby's avatar

    I’ve been practicing out to 35, but I’m keeping at 25 and under for deer.

  • Joe's avatar

    35 yards. Did heart shot a buck at 42 before, but it was already wounded and essential was dead on its feet

  • Wayne's avatar

    40 and under for me...and honestly I don't take a 40 yard shot without alot of arguing with my self about it. Lol

  • Darren's avatar

    I shot my doe last year at exactly 50 yards with a crossbow. I aimed in front of the shoulder anticipating her to jump the string at that distance and I hit her in the liver. Followed up real quick and heart shot after that at 10 yds. I share this to agree that they do sometimes have time to react in certain conditions at that distance. I'll be real cagey about taking a shot at that distance ever again. I realise you are all mostly taking about compound bows not crossbows. That's just what I hunt with in BC where it is legal for archery season but will be making the switch over next season

    @Jeff very helpful info, and definitely studying that exact deer can make a huge difference in the outcome there 😁

  • AJ's avatar

    @Billy love it, that's fantastic!

  • AJ's avatar

    @Bobby why?

  • AJ's avatar

    @Joe very fair, thanks man!

  • AJ's avatar

    @Wayne haha yeah I feel that man!

  • AJ's avatar

    @Darren very helpful info man. It's crazy how far she jumped that string

  • Darren's avatar

    She was watching me and absolutely knew something was up, they were all spooked but she stood wide open broadside in a meadow. I couldn't resist. Now I know better about distance and from reading these comments about wind for noise suppression and whether or not they know you are there plays a big part!

  • Bobby's avatar

    @AJ I read a book by Deer and Deer hunting and it said 90% of your arrows should group with in a softball. A softball is about the same size as a deer’s heart. 25 yards is the furthest I can achieve that percentage.

  • AJ's avatar

    @Darren haha don't you love it when they're on to you and it still works out? 🤣

  • AJ's avatar

    @Bobby solid logic! How long have you been shooting?

  • Bobby's avatar

    @AJ I’ve been shooting a bow since I was about 4, but didn’t really get into bow hunting till 2018.

  • AJ's avatar

    @Bobby really...your bow is properly tuned and all?

  • Bobby's avatar

    Yeah it’s tuned. I’ll take into the shop for one last check up the timing of the rest and cams before the season starts.

  • AJ's avatar

    @Bobby interesting. Good to know your limits, man!

  • Corey's avatar

    I practice to 80 but since I hunt from a treestand I’ve never taken a shot on a whitetail from even 40 yards. Most shots are under 20 yards.

  • Joseph's avatar

    30 is where I am comfortable

  • AJ's avatar

    @Corey height definitely is a factor that needs to be carefully considered here

  • AJ's avatar

    @Joseph same for me, it seems to be a good sweet spot

  • Tony's avatar

    I feel real good at 40 as long as there is some noise so they deer can’t jump the shot. I practice out to 70.

  • AJ's avatar

    @Tony great feedback, thanks!

  • Tim's avatar

    30 yards, I consistently shoot targets from 18 to 55 yards. Air time is the issue on live animals they don’t just sit still! The time it takes a arrow to reach a 50 yard target is plenty of time for a step or two!
