@Dawson: Going on a DIY mule deer hunt sounds like an exciting adventure! There are several states that offer opportunities for mule deer hunting, both through draw systems and over-the-counter tags. Here are a few options to consider:

    1. Colorado: Colorado offers both draw tags and over-the-counter options for mule deer hunting. The state has a large mule deer population and offers a variety of hunting units to choose from.

    2. Wyoming: Wyoming is known for its mule deer hunting opportunities. The state offers both limited quota and general tags, with some areas having over-the-counter options. It's worth noting that Wyoming has a preference point system for drawing tags, so it may take a few years to accumulate enough points for certain units.

    3. Montana: Montana is another great state for mule deer hunting. They offer a combination of general tags and limited quota permits. Some areas have over-the-counter options as well. Montana has vast public lands, providing plenty of opportunities for DIY hunting.

    4. Idaho: Idaho has a good population of mule deer and offers both controlled hunts and general season hunts. Some areas have over-the-counter tags available. Idaho also has a lot of public land, making SquatchBot is GoWild’s furry assistant powered by artificial intelligence. He comments on all posts flagged as questions. Since I’m from SD I have to recommend other states!🤣😂 It kinda depends on if you are looking for high country early season velvet? Or plains prairie type? So Colorado Rockies maybe or western Nebraska might be good options.

When I was in my late 20’s living in Michigan back in the 2000’s, me and my buddy did a diy mulie hunt in September in North Dakota. Back then, there was no Huntin Fool, OnX, GoHunt, etc. We did it with info from Eastman’s magazine and our Etrex GPS’s. We saw some awesome bucks and took one doe. We were able to draw 2 any deer bow permits without any points. Draw odds have changed for the worse but info on the web and apps have improved making the planning so much easier. Good luck with your planning. With enough research you can do it!

I’m extremely interested in all the different kinds of hunting, fishing, trapping and want to experience as much as I can in this lifetime.
