It was a slightly rainy day and I didn’t have alot of work to do, so I grabbed my pup Holly and headed for the cedars. I knew a dense patch of woods big axis bucks liked to hangout in during the day so we got downwind and started stalking the 300-400yrds into the cover. As I approached the “hole” I was beginning to lose hope when I caught movement through a patch of trees. I threw my rifle up and could make out an axis doe through a small hole in the trees. As I kept my scope locked on the doe, I could make out a large set of antlers in the trees behind her. I held the crosshairs steady waiting for the buck to take the fatal step into my shot window. A couple seconds and a loud bang later I had my first axis buck dead on the ground my hunting dog in training along for the ride!
