For the 2nd elk hunt we moved to a different unit that I’ve hunted in the past. It’s known for some good bulls. First morning we spotted elk right away. My hunter Joe and I tried to make a move on a good bull but some other hunters came in from the bottom and spooked them out of the country. Later in the afternoon our spotter @ridge_.hunter2 found a really nice bull. Long beams and wide. The 3 of us snuck around the hill he was on to get down wind and above him. When we came over the hill the bull was walking right toward us 100 yards away. Joe centered the cross hairs on the muzzleloader and let one rip. Hitting the bull solid he dropped right in his tracks. We waited for a few minutes and started walking down to it. Then all the sudden the bull got up and walked off into the brush. Not wanting to push him we backed out and headed back to camp. Grabbed a couple more guys some lights and headed back out to look. Normally we would just wait till morning but we had thunder storms headed are way so we wanted to get on the blood trail before It got washed away. When we got to the spot we found a lot of blood and starting following the trail. Couple hundred yards later we come over a small hill and there layed the bull. I can’t believe this bull got up and walked off. There was so much blood it just goes to show how tuff these elk can be! Half way through skinning and quartering the skies let loose and we were in the middle of an all out thunder and lightening storm pouring down rain. Sometime after 2am we made it back to camp wet cold and full of smiles. @lohoutfitters
