I guided Kip who is a repeat hunter with @lohoutfitters In October Kip and his 2 sons elk hunted with us and all tagged out on some nice bull elk. This was a new unit for me so I got there early and started scouting. Going into the hunt we knew with the warm temps the hunting was going to be tuff. Kip being over 70 years old most would think he couldn’t hunt as hard as some younger. That is definitely not the case with him. We hunted hard. Seeing lots of does but no shooter bucks. The bucks were in their beds at first light and not moving till the sun went down. After the 3rd day both his sons had tagged out and asked to tag along with us. Absolutely. Nothing better then watching families enjoy the outdoors together. I decided to hike into a new spot. First light we spotted a really nice 3x3 but some other hunters in private spooked them. Afternoon we got to a spot over looking a dry creek bed with more cover. It was hot. Midday I started glassing hard in the small cuts and shaded areas behind yucca’s. I scanned across and saw nothing and when I scanned back I happen to time it right when a real nice buck stood up to feed for a sec and reposition to lay back down. I got lucky to be looking in the right spot. The boys stayed there and kept and eye on him while Kip and I made our move. Down across the valley and up the other side out of site to get down wind. When I peaked over the edge to look into the cut I saw nothing. I kept glassing the shaded areas. That’s when I saw the flicker of an ear. He was only 180yds away bedded tight into the brush. Kip got setup on the sticks and when the deer stood he let the hammer down. The deer went about another 100yds and piled up. By the time we got back to the truck we had hiked over 12 miles that day and Kip even helped pack out. Most people see this and think o he’s just lucky to be in that shape. But it’s all because of hard work and eating right. Nothing to do with luck. If you take care of your body it’ll take care of you. I hope when I’m that age I can still do this! Great hunt guys. Hard to believe this is my job when I get to hunt with people like you. See you again soon.
