I am not in the area but offering to cover fuel and food will go a long way. And as a side note learn the set ups, when to use what type of call and how to read birds, but don't burn your bridge by going back to their spot unless you are with them or have permission.

ID has a lot to do with size and wing speed as well as how they are moving together. This is just one man's novice opinion but far and away homework will cut the learning curve down. If you can get out there and find birds and know where they already want to be(the X) they are far more willing to put the landing gear down. Try to find and join your local DU chapter and I am sure you'll find some folks to help you out.

Join your local Ducks Unlimited chapter. They have tons of meetups and you can feel good about donating to the cause.
