well done and beautiful story/perseverance! I just shot my first mature public land buck with my crossbow the morning before...certainly one I will never forget! Great job...looking forward to hearing about your 2023 season!

Pulling off some first’s on my last day of bow season! Yesterday I got my first bow deer/buck, and first deer shot out of my saddle! Dad wanted summer sausage so, I was willing to harvest anything! It was down to the last half hour and a spike had walked down the field edge alongside a corn field that was partially combined (snow was too deep for the combine) I drew back on the spike at 15 yards but his vitals were blocked by “Y” in a tree. Waiting, shaking/shivering at full draw for a minute and a half, the spike never came into a shot opportunity before a doe and her fawns south of me caught wind of me and blew. This spooked the spike and he ran into the woods. I vocal grunted after him but he didn’t hesitate. Frustrated and doubting I’d get another opportunity before end of shooting hours, the shivers came back and I was starting to accept my 22’ bow season was coming to an unsuccessful end. A little pissed off at the doe that blew at me 3 times that night (that I gladly would’ve taken), I unclipped my release from my D loop and looked around at my last minutes of the season. I watched the “waving” dried up corn husks blowing in the wind, and the grey December skies. Ready to start packing up I wiggled my toes and rocked in my saddle to one last time to remember the feeling - or lack of feeling in my feet. I looked from left to right one last time and through the quaking aspen and white oak branches I see a dark body coming my way. It was a cautious walk not a cruising or purposeful walk, and no feeding. I saw tines against the snow and when he walked toward me ears perked forward and head bobbing I realized he was a 10 point. Because it was a hang and hunt scenario I didn’t have time to clear away a ton of branches so, I had a very small window to shoot through twigs. I drew back and waited for him to walk into my sight. Praying my adrenaline shakes wouldn’t mess up the shot I grunted once… he didn’t stop, took two steps, and now behind more branches, I had to anticipate his next window. I grunted one last time and he stopped and I let it fly. Double lung at 20 yards with a single bevel broad head! He ran 66 yards without leaving the cornfield. I would’ve been thankful for any deer harvested with my bow and he was the last thing I expected to step out in front of me at 20 yards. Just an absolutely unbelievable hunt, definitely one of the best hunts to end the year on and one I won’t forget! I’m thankful for the family for helping me track him and drag him. So so so many amazing memories this year and I’m excited to head into 2023 on a good note.
