@Brandon about an hr i bear hunt and coon hunt some in Va. Both my daughter live in Va 1 in Lynchburg and 1 in Hillsville. I live in a little town called Cool Ridge Wv

  • Brandon's avatar

@Brandon I'm an hour and half from Lynchburg my job takes me to Roanoke and Lynchburg alot, I got a guy I work with probably lives not far from you in WVa he was big into bear hunting and he said yall have good amount of land to hunt on.

  • Brandon's avatar

@Brandon certain parts of Wv does but where im at it is getting less and less

  • Brandon's avatar

@Brandon don't I know it , its sad, a lot of farm land around here is going to solar farm,if it wasn't for farmers and timber company land we wouldn't have land to hunt.

@Brandon , I go deer hunting with dogs but wouldn't call myself a deer hunter, didn't even load the gun the times I went this past year, just walked some boys dogs, made some drives so they could shoot and went to listen. welcome aboard

@Oak appreciate it, what part of VA are you from?

  • Oak Haven's avatar

half an hour east of Charlottesville 40 mins west of Richmond

  • Oak Haven's avatar

@Brandon what part the state you in?

  • Brandon's avatar

@Oak I got family in your area, im hour to hour and a half south east from you, in Amelia

  • Oak Haven's avatar

@Brandon any of your club land got any grey foxes or bobcats? always looking to find more land with the game I like to hunt. Amelia def isn't too for. I'm in the edge where goochland fluvanna and Louisa come together

  • Brandon's avatar

@Oak we have some grey fox I ran a nice red during deer season, my dogs run Fox, Deer and coyotes what ever they get up first lol, I don't care to kill the fox I'd rather just run it, iv never seen a bobcat not saying we don't have some iv never seen one, what kinda areas do bobcats like to live in?

  • Oak Haven's avatar

@Brandon same kinda area you find grey foxes, thickets and briars. mine run fox and cats, deer and coyotes are a no no. only foxes or cats I kill are ones the dogs catch on the ground. I've hunted a couple spots in Amelia for a few years with a buddy, always found cats to run, but didn't get that way this year

  • Brandon's avatar

@Oak we probably have a few knocking around, i know fox is continuous chase season, how does cat season run?

  • Oak Haven's avatar

@Brandon if you wanna harvest one with a gun it's usually 1st part of Nov thru end of Feb. I run them when the dogs jump them no matter what time of year, like I said don't shoot em

  • Brandon's avatar

@Oak o ok sounds like fun iv never been out with broke cat or fox dogs, I know guys in Greenville va out near Emporia that has cat and fox hounds and is always posting pictures of then holding up foxes in the summer like I said looks fun

  • Oak Haven's avatar

yeah I've hunted a lot down that part the country alot with some friends, crops are fun to run in, not as many crops around my part of VA where the foxes are. they have a lot more cats down in that part the country than up here where I am too. you wanna go some time your welcome to come check it out, or I can come over your way and try in your area.

  • Brandon's avatar

@Oak looking forward to it,how often do you run?

  • Oak Haven's avatar

@Brandon , every chance I can go, usually 3-4 days a week I get my hounds out. during regular deer season and spring gobbler I tend to back it down to 2-3 times a week, depending on where I can sneak out and not bother deer hunters. my older dogs don't honor strange dogs, I'm often around rabbit beagles and deer dogs year round, so they don't even go check them dogs when they are running usually.

  • Brandon's avatar

@Oak ok cool what size chunk of land you like to run on?

  • Oak Haven's avatar

@Brandon as long as it has game and isn't near bad roads size doesn't matter, helps is other local landowners aren't hard to deal with either but I've been yelled at more than once over last 20 years I can handle that long as dogs ain't hurt. I've hunted spots that were 10 acres and spots that were a thousand. usually fifty to hundred acres is a good starting place , like I said I've hunted successfully on less.

  • Brandon's avatar

@Oak o ok we have one block that is at least 500 we have 1500 2000 total land owners are pretty good, if you want to get together some time you can bring a few dogs and see how it goes or you can just come down and I can show you around

  • Oak Haven's avatar

@Brandon definitely interested in doing one of the 2. I've found a lot of land owners are okay with people running predators that arent okay with dogs chasing deers. like I said I've started in little as 10 acres. I have struck and trailed cats for hours/miles before jumping them in the past, once they get jumped they tend to stay on small area long as dogs pressure them. I'm sure your familiar with running patterns of reds and greys.

  • Brandon's avatar

@Oak most definitely, we have one landowner near us don't like dogs of any kind, they are Dog rescue people think they probably donate to the HSUS

  • Brandon's avatar

buts very rare dogs go that way

  • Harvey's avatar

I have raccoon hunted with hounds most of my life but I would like to deer hunt with dogs sometime I think that would be a blast

Go to “trail mix” and select houndsman. You’ll find a lot of dog men… and women
