    Try a .270 I believe the ammo is cheaper also

    @Kurt thank you. I was excited to put some meat in the freezer & it’s nice to know the blind isn’t going to keep them from still checking out field. The main goal with it is to hopefully be able to get something with the kiddos with us & it’s an easy get to last minute spot. I hunt with a .270 and really like it, but we’re trying out some that don’t kick as much in hopes that our kiddos can start shooting some. Our oldest shot it yesterday.

    @Dave Henson thank you Dave

    @Mike thank you Mike. It’s been a good opening weekend. My wife got her a buck on opening day evening. I had a good morning hunt & was still able to put something together that seems like it’ll be promising for the kids to set in of an evening for a short time when they get home in the evenings 👊

    @John excellent! Glad to see you’re getting them involved 👊

    @Mike I think I get more excited seeing my wife get something & taking the kids, then if I’m hunting myself now a days. It’s so fun & enjoyable knowing that we’re doing something that all the family can get into. It also makes for some pretty tasty meal along the way too 👊

    @John no doubt! I’m right there with ya. Can’t beat the feeling of a successful friend or family member!!

    @Mike I know you know more about guns then I do. I’ve only got a .270 that I’ve had since I was a kid for deer hunting. What would you think a good caliber would be to start kids out on? Our oldest is 6 & he did shoot the creedmoor we have borrowed. But, I’m open to any suggestions that you would recommend.

    @John for the real little ones, I’d go with a 350 Legend that’s solid to 200 yds and zero recoil. Ammo is plentiful and affordable. Can’t go wrong with the 243 either if you prefer necked cartridges.

    @Mike thank you! I’ll have to check out the 350 Legend. That’s one I’ve not looked at. I’m trying to gather all the info I can. But, no recoil is what I’m after. It’s solid for deer 200 & under is what I’m looking for. I’m hoping to keep the kids shots 50-75 yards at most.

    It’d be perfect then. My Savage is a tack driver, and I know several that own the Ruger with no complaints. I would highly suggest 180gr bullets over the more popular 150’s. I’ve heard of a few poor experiences with the 150’s not leaving much of a blood trail. Those I’ve heard that from said they switched to 160’s or 180’s and the problem went away. I just got mine last year and shot a doe with it at 110 yards. Dropped her in her tracks.

    Nice job. Congratulations

    @Mike thank you Mike! I’m going to start looking into them. I just really am looking for the least amount of recoil I can find. That 6.5 seemed like it was a lot softer then the .270 but it still seemed like it kicked him decent. He just shot it once & said he didn’t like the boom. I think it was the kick. But, he’s been shooting archery with us for several years & is showing interest in shooting rifles with us. I just don’t want to scare him & want it to be as fun as we can make it for him.

    @Terry thank you!

    @John I bet if you went to your local gun club you could find somebody that has one that would let him shoot it. You could put this thing on the end of your nose and touch it off without flinching, haha

  • John's avatar

    @Mike that’s what I’m talking about! But I don’t want you to try on my nose! Lol

  • Mike's avatar

    @John 🤣👊

  • John's avatar

    @Dave Henson it was on my list too. Just trying to gather all kinds of options because I’m mainly a bow fella

    Started my daughter with a 300 blackout bolt gun and she’s done great with it. Took her first deer with it two years ago.

  • John's avatar

    @Brad that’s awesome! How old was she when she started out?

    Congratulations!
