Did you look at.308? Ammo is always available and it drops anything from Deer to Elk

@Billy Looked at it several times, but not feeling that’s the best caliber for me.

@Cameron ammo availability is a solid factor. Good luck 👍🏼

@Casey Fortunately the standards are easier to find ammo for.

Great post. And love that old advertisement. My pops used to have a box full of Field and Stream magazines from the 1950’s - 1960’s, incredible hand drawn artwork, great articles/stories… As for the rounds? My best friend is a die hard 30-06 lover, I’m in the .308 and yes, 6.5 creed family, covers what I enjoy hunting, so I guess that is the core question, what do you plan on hunting?

  • Cameron's avatar

@David Deer, bear, coyote, and hogs.

  • David's avatar

@Cameron I’ve never been bear hunting, but I’m going to guess you need a heck of lot my

@David …heck of a lot more punch than you would for a deer/yote, hogs? Like tanks, so maybe the 30-06, depending on the load I figure..

@David Yes since I’m bear and hog hunting. Some places really open up to 300+ yards and something with extra umph down range would be preferred. Another plus of the standard length long action calibers us they have a 22” barrel so it’s close to compact and that’s perfect since some places I hunt get up close and personal just about.

@David Looked at the ballistics of 308, 270, and 30-06. Really about the same. The only difference is 270 has less bullet drop. May end up going 308: really getting 30-06 performance with same bullet and bullet weight.

@Cameron I’ve shot Elk, pigs, deer, antelope with a .308. That caliber will handle the job

@Billy It’s amazing how there’s really not much difference between short action calibers and long action standard length. It’s not until long action magnums is there a big difference. The only plus to 30-06 is heavier bullets. The 270 drops less at farther distances. 308 energy drops 400 ft lbs in 100 yards.
