Over the years I’ve learned to hunt animals “where they are”--that includes personality traits and learned behaviors.  One such pair of “animals” were “The Chieftains”…two magnificent gobblers who paraded around our farm like they owned it prior to the opening of the season.  In preparation, we set a ground blind where they daily held court for our oldest son. 

When opening day arrived, my husband and son hunted from the blind.  They saw those “boys of spring” several times, however, they refused to come anywhere near the blind.  My oldest is an EXCELLENT caller, so this was puzzling.  Over the course of 2-3 sits, the conclusion was made that those birds were call and decoy shy, yet my son didn’t have the discipline to sit tight and wait.  We decided that we’d move him to another area and I would sit that blind and wait them out.

Sure enough, those two mature gobblers wanted nothing to do calls or decoys.  To kill this one I sat an entire day… quietly.  I saw them 4 times, each time they came a in a little closer to my position.  They were just hanging with hens and eating bugs or whatever and doing their thing.  The 4th time they came through the clearing, they were within crossbow range and I as this guy came into strut I put him to the ground with a well-placed arrow.
