Good afternoon from Gobbler Knob!  Working on something a little different today.  When I’m
not making flintlocks and turkey calls, I serve part-time as a court officer for our judicial system.  At the end of February, one of my lieutenants is retiring after a long and distinguished career.  It is for him I made the knife I posted a few days ago.  I am now making a box in which to display it.

It will be made of cherry.  I just finished creating the joints which will join the sides to the base.  I’ll also create sides for the lid.  They’ll rest upon these sides when closed.  Making these joints by hand is labor-intensive.  Cut and file, cut and file until they fit properly.  This is one of the means by which 18th Century boxes were made.  It makes me happy to carry on that tradition.

I sent the knife off to another law enforcement officer in East Tennessee, who is also a leather craftsman, to make a sheath for the knife.  He’s returning them to me tomorrow.  I’ll continue for the inside of the box upon their arrival.  Stay tuned…
