What is the red substance preventing the flint from getting crushed on the hammer, if I'm interpreting its use right.🤔

That is actually leather. It helps the jaws of the cock to grip the flint. It’s part of the equation for near-instantaneous ignition.

The rifle looks remarkable, I can't wait to see the complete set.
