    We all had to start somewhere. It is just part of learning and growing. I highly recommend finding a local shop that offers tying demos to go watch and ask questions. I used to do tying demos at a couple of local places, and I was able to go into great detail showing beginners exactly how to deal with certain things that were causing them problems. Looking back, those were some great days, but unfortunately life got in the way. Best of luck on your new addiction.

    @Travis thanks, man. For sure. I know bass pro does some classes every once in a while. Got to wait for all this COVID stuff to be over with first though.

    @Derek I assume you are in the Louisville area...? I will ask a friend who owns a fly shop here to see if he knows of a good local one in your area. Otherwise, if you find yourself down in the East TN Smoky Mountains do yourself a favor and stop by Little River Outfitters. They are on par, if not better than, every fly shop I have been to in the Rockies. They used to host an annual 2-day event in Townsend, TN primarily for fly fishing, and it was a huge draw with all the hotels booking up. I was fortunate to participate in it a couple of times, and met Lefty Kreh and others at it.

    @Travis yes, I am in Louisville. I don't honestly know of any local type fly shops here, just the big stores. Bass Pro, Cabelas, Orvis. Etc. I would greatly appreciate any contact information you can give me. I'll definitely check out Little River Outfitters if I'm ever in the area!

    Good luck to you Derek. Have never fly fished before but have a good friend who does and he tells me it is very addicting and very gratifying.

  • Derek's avatar

    @Chuck it's probably the most addicting thing I've encountered in a while. I just started fly fishing this year and I am hooked, pun intended. I always enjoyed fishing, but it was never my favorite thing, but I'll jump on any chance I get to go out with the fly rod. Now I'm trying to learn to tie my own flies.

    @Derek good luck man keep us posted on how it’s going. For now I have to live with our team roping addiction. When you live in the desert it’s hard to go fishing😂

  • Derek's avatar

    @Chuck haha, true. I imagine there's some good fly fishing spots if you drive east a little though. Team roping sounds like a hell of a good time too though.

  • Chuck's avatar

    Yeah a few hours north and/or West and we can be in Colorado or New Mexico. Team roping is a very expensive hobby but it can be really enjoyable.

  • Derek's avatar

    @Chuck ha! Sounds like fly fishing!

  • Chuck's avatar

    @Derek difference being you don’t have to feed those fly rods everyday and for some reason the horses and steers think they need to eat everyday. Not a complaint at all, I feel very blessed that Gods has provided the means financially for us to be able to enjoy it. Enjoy your new passion my friend

  • Derek's avatar

    @Chuck nope, don't have to feed the fly rods, just gotta feed the passion. Haha. Already trying to figure out how I can get out west soon to do some fly fishing. I might have a chance to go to Montana soonish.

  • Derek's avatar

    @Ferg ha! How long do I got again? Haha, I may need longer before I'm in a position to teach.

  • Ferg's avatar

    @Derek eh e way things are going you have plenty of time

  • Derek's avatar

  • Ferg's avatar

  • Derek's avatar

    @Ferg for sure!

  • Ferg's avatar

    @Derek sorted man, hope he’s patient 🤣

  • Appalachian's avatar

    @Derek man bust you out some ugly clousers, jumbo wooly buggers and some muddler minnow s and wear out the smallmouth in the summertime creeks. Pretty flies are for people to look at, ugly flies catch fish. Smallmouth>trout on the fly IMHO.

    @Derek

  • Derek's avatar

    @Appalachian nice! I'm actually headed out early tomorrow to hopefully get on some small mouth.

  • Jacob's avatar

    @Derek the fly shop at Quest Outdoors has a tying night. Check that one out, post-lockdown.

  • Derek's avatar

    @Jacob definitely will!

  • Jacob's avatar

    @Appalachian nice craw pattern! Post a link to a recipe if you’ve got it.

  • Appalachian's avatar

    @Jacob man, I just whipped those up. Can't remember the size of the hook but they were long shank and I crimped a split shot right below the eye of the hook. I can't remember what the material for the tail is but it's fairly stout filament like stuff. The body is chenile, the claws are marabou. I used copper wire to "bundle" the marabou and form them to the proper orientation. The head is some darker rough yarn type material and I can't remember what I made the antenna out of lol. Sorry I dont know the vocab lol I don't claim to know much about that business, just enough to be dangerous lol

  • Appalachian's avatar

    @Derek best of luck, hope you put a bend in the pole

  • Derek's avatar

    When you fish with one and get a fish or two to bite - who cares what it looks like. Have fun!

  • Derek's avatar

    @Appalachian thanks!

  • Derek's avatar

    @Derek right? Haha.
