October 2nd, 2021 was a day I won’t soon forget! I’ve never killed an opening day buck before, but conditions were right and the stars aligned on this hunt that resulted in killing my biggest PA archery buck to date. I started hunting the area last year and found this buck to be frequenting some of my cameras. A big bodied, old mountain warrior that I couldn’t quite figure out. After studying hundreds of trail cam photos in correlation with the @Spartan Forge  predictions and historical weather, I found some consistencies in his movement and bedding. I found both of his sheds this spring and told my family that I really thought I had a good chance at him. 

Hiking into my stand that morning, I was extremely confident in the possibility of seeing him, but it’s the big woods and it’s deer hunting, so it was nothing more than an educated guess at that point. The setup was slightly risky, and broke a lot of the “rules” you hear about in deer hunting. I hunted a creek bottom and the morning in the early season. Two weekends prior, I was in there scouting with my Dad. I checked with milkweed to understand how the thermals worked with the predominant winds. Everything seemed perfect and it was good enough to get this buck to 14 yards without being detected. I’m so thankful for this opportunity and grateful that I was able to learn from my family and close friends the small details of hunting the big woods that leads to moments like this.
