@Kurt Kinard you’ve got to tell me more! What is a WI blue buck? I’ve lived in WI my whole life and never head of that. 

Back In Early 60’s & 70’s Louisiana Wildlife & Fishers Had Them Transported From Wisconsin To Louisiana To Breed With Louisiana Swamp Donkeys .. The Color Of Them Makes Them Look Blue …. I Shot A Swamp Donkey Last Month And He Had That Blue Tint To Him ……

This was a classic rut style hunt where making a good decision in the morning darkness paid off big. It was November 13 and I decided to go into an area I hadn’t scouted or hunted since the previous fall but I have observed a lot of bucks chasing does in this area in the past. It was a cold and wet morning with snow/sleet that was supposed to turn to rain later in the morning. I took my climber, bow, and tree umbrella in the light of my head lamp down into the area I planned to hunt. I had thought to setup near a pinch along the edge of a thick cedar swamp and a small grassy swale about 80 yards from the swamp edge. As I approached I looked up and saw two shinning eyes about 25 yards ahead, near the edge of the swamp. I froze and watched as a second set of eyes rose up about 8” higher than the first and right behind. I froze and aimed my light downward and stood motionless as the sleet rained down. The first deer slowly worked off along the edge of the swamp as the second deer carelessly followed right behind. Instantly knew I had to set up within shooting range of that does path as she was likely in heat and the larger deer appeared to be a big buck on her trail. I followed their back trail about 40 yards further toward the swale grass pothole and set up. Not long after daylight, I saw a nice 6 point work with his nose to the ground along the edge of the swale grass and follow the exact trail the two deer in the dark had been on, which took him past me at 17 yards. I knew this would possibly be my last chance at a buck before gun season opened the following weekend, but my guy said that this hot does trail would be a hot ticket that morning. I passed the buck and continued watching that exact trail. After about an hour the sleet turned to a very cold rain and I needed to adjust my umbrella as the water was working it’s way down the tree, down my safety harness tether and into my jacket. After turning around and futsing with my umbrella for a few minutes, I finished up and slowly turned around. Immediately, I saw a massive buck and big brow tines heading right toward me on the same trail the previous deer had worked down. I grabbed my bow and within seconds the big buck was within bow range and I was at full draw. I grunted him to a stop and released an arrow right into his chest cavity. He took off running hard directly into the thick cedar swamp. I called my mother who was at her house about an hour and a half away and she was on her way. My dad was hunting the rifle season in Missouri so I told him what had happened while he was in a stand hunting also. I met my mother at our cabin and we headed out with the deer cart to find the buck. He only went about 65 yards and was piled up in the thick alders. He had a cool swamp buck looking heavy rack with 7 points but was one it the longest, long legged deer I’ve ever seen. Dressed out at 217 lbs.
