I killed this huge low fence axis buck 3 years ago today. It was my biggest axis to date at the time, but I have since killed a larger one on the same 300 acres that me and my dad lease. This was one of two axis bucks I killed that weekend, both of them being in velvet as most of them tend to be in the winter where we hunt near Sonora, TX. Late winter and spring have been my most successful times for free range axis hunting in the lone star state. The shear size of an axis buck when compared to a  typical west Texas white-tailed buck is something that will leave you awestruck. Add to that an unmistakable axis buck roar and some of the best venison you’ve ever tried, and it’s easy to see why they are such a sought after species. A lot of folks argue that exotics have no place in the ecosystem due to the negative impacts they have on native species; however, if you ask me, I’m more than okay with free range axis in Texas.
