Challenging Turkey Hunting in Northeast Mississippi: Little Gobbling and Frustration in Calling Them In

I know we all love the gobbling and strutting but I’m sure they are with hen’s. Try challenging them with some gobbler yelping and cutting. Get as close as possible before daybreak and try to get him on the ground before the hens fly down 🤷🏻‍♂️

@Tyler yes sir did all that. I just couldn’t get as close as I wanted cause they were over chest deep water. I always try to get inside 100 yards from them on roost. I even gobbled at them this morning. Not interested. Several gobblers still together. I’ve hunted turkeys around 30 years and have dealt with about everything but never saw them act like this. Idk man just weird

@Tyler thanks for the tips bud. I can set and wait on them and kill one but it’s not about a kill anymore. I like to work them and enjoy the show. God is great. He’ll deliver me one before long. One thing I’ve said for years around here in Mississippi is that we are breeding a bird that doesn’t gobble as much cause we kill the ones that gobble a lot. Our season opens too early and runs way too long. I love how Missouri does there’s. Can’t wait to get up there

@Tom I could kill one setting on a field with decoys like you see on tv this evening but that ain’t turkey hunting. I’ve killed them since I was 9 years old. The real way. Running and gunning. Calling em up and smoke their heads in the woods. I don’t sneak up on them. I don’t set and wait on them. That’s just not turkey hunting. These tv shows where they set in blind on field over decoys kill me. I wish people would hunt them the old fashioned way. I know legal is legal though

That’s awesome. I can’t stand sitting in a blind. I find a tree in the shade. I have used decoys, but most of the time they have scared more turkeys than they’ve brought in.

Decoys are good in certain situations but I use the terrain and set up to where a old gobbler has to show hisself in order to see if there’s a hen or not close enough to shoot

That front that went thru there, storms, May have buggered.

@Wade - might ought find them. I’m up there to hunt 4/14 & 4/15, maybe some early on 4/16. Have to hunt with Papaw too.

Everyone is good over here. Scotty had Covid earlier this week but he seems fine now. David went to the Bassmasters Classic in Knoxville, comes home today.

I’m headed to a different place this morning hopefully I find some that want to talk

Its not like it once was here in Va. @Wade . I mostly blame coyotes, that wasn’t here in past years. And over hunting-calling.

@Kenneth yes sir our numbers are fine. I heard a little more gobbling this morning but not much. Had one come walking down bottom yelping at me like a jake. When he got there it was a long beard. I’ll post pics in a bit. 1&1/4 spurs. I think they are just behind schedule.

How did you catch that beautiful turkey, did you throw feed around or something???
