We all know the classic Thanksgiving story of a peaceful meal shared between native Americans and settlers. To the surprise of many, this is far from truthful history. 

It was the Wampanoag in 1621 who helped the first wave of Puritans arriving on our shores, showing them how to plant crops, forage for wild foods and basically survive. The first official mention of a “Thanksgiving” celebration occurs in 1637, after the colonists brutally massacre an entire Pequot village, then subsequently celebrate their barbaric victory. 
It wasn't until almost 200 years later that president Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. At this point it had nothing to do with native Americans and was invented to unite a divided nation after the Civil War.

Many indigenous and those of native decent don't celebrate Thanksgiving, which is understandable. There was nothing at the time for the indigenous to be greatful for. However fast forward to present, we are still here, and that is EVERYTHING to be greatful for. 

People may not realize it, but what every person in this country shares on this day is the very history of this nation, OUR FOODS. Most of our Thanksgiving recipes are made with indigenous foods such as turkey, corn, beans, pumpkins, maple, wild rice etc. This is truly a special part of the holiday and something that should be embraced. After all, the food is the main hype!

Foods like chanterelles, morels, ramps, wild ginger, chokecherries, wild plums, crab apples, cactus fruit, paw paws, berries, cattails, maple, and the true wild rice growing around the Great Lakes region and Chesapeake Bay are all indigenous. Cedar, rose-hips, hickory, acorns and walnuts add to the list. Heirloom beans, squash and pumpkins, and Native corn varieties, all coming in many shapes, sizes and colors. 

  During this holiday we should include foods such as as Cedar-braised rabbit or venison wild mushroom stew. Sunchokes, sumac and pine are all great additions for squash, pumpkins and wild rice. We can incorporate these true indigenous foods within our celebrations which adds education, honor and respect to the history of this land. Thanksgiving should be a time to explore a deeper connection to real “American” foods by understanding true Native-American histories.
There is no need to make Thanksgiving about a false past. It is so much better when it celebrates the beauty of the present. 

As you enjoy your meal today, think of the land in which these foods originated and the people who were giving enough to share🙌🦃🌽🍅
