@Danny Luttrell haha papaw JC would love the office. Recycled everything—bourbon barrel tables, barn tin, coolers used as tables, old crates holding kitchen supplies.

Great story behind a unique and cool desk.

Cool story. I have an anvil with my great grandpa’s initials welded on the side and his big anvil that he used to shoe horses, he was a blacksmith. I also have a couple of items from my grandpa, who was a mechanic and gunsmith. They’re priceless to me. I completely understand the meaning of your vise. 

@Darrin Garrett that is awesome! Have you done anything with the anvil? 

@Brad Luttrell I used the smaller one when I was shoeing horses and keep the bigger one in my shop. I also have my Great Gpa’s hoof knife and his shoeing hammer. They’re both on the mantle in my living room. 

Awesome story Brad, i know how that feels, my father was an auto mechanic all his life and i still have the toolbox he had when he retired, tools are mix an match these days but dads name is engraved on a plaque mounted to it by Snap-on, hes been gone since 1999 but i miss him every day

That's the perfect way to honor him, when times get tough at work, you can just look at that vice and know he is there helping you out.

This desk is special to me. ❤️ It has a story behind it.

For a few of us, the personalization even meant building our own work station. 

I'm one of those people, and my desk at GoWild has special meaning behind it. 

I built this desk when we moved into the current GoWild office in 2018. 

First, if you want a cheap desk, iron pipe is not the way to go. 😂 But I built the entire desk themed to that vice you see on the corner of the desk.

That vice was my papaw's and it's one of the few things of his that I own. 

Papaw was a coal mine mechanic, and when he retired, he started his own garage. He'd often find bizarre stuff in cars he would "junk." When I was really young, he was also a constant figure at auctions, and would often buy boxes of random things on the chance something valuable was inside. 

Who knows where papaw found this vice. All I know is he kept it because he thought it was cool—and it was. When it was given to me, I looked it up and found a 100+ year old patent for the device. The contraption sat in my garage for 2 years after papaw died before I decided what to do with it.

I designed this entire desk around the vice. The vice splits the double level desk and appears to be compressing it. Little did I know how much pressure I'd be facing at times while working from this desk. 

Watching my papaw as I grew up, I recognized he was one of the hardest workers I had ever seen. All the way up until his final years, all he wanted to do was make the 75 yard walk to his garage to see how my uncle was doing running it. It was a sad time when he realized he'd never get back down there. The few steps had become too much for him. 

I knew startup life was going to be a lot. Much of my work ethic came from papaw, so it seemed like a perfect way to honor him—using his vice to hold my desk—and me—together.

He passed the summer of 2016, a few months before I founded GoWild.
