It's been a long, long season. I passed up a spike buck opening weekend and have been kicking myself ever since. But a friend offered to let me hunt on his property and on my second outing this happened.

It was an afternoon hunt, had been rainy, foggy. My spirits were kind of low to be honest. But I climbed all the way to the top of the hill with my 350 Legend to climb up in a ladder stand. There is no cover where the stand is, and with the wind shifting on me constantly, I just started praying. About 4:30pm, my husband and I are texting jokes back and forth, and I heard something walking in on my right side. It was a scraggly looking doe who was already spooked. She popped up about 15 yards from me and immediately looked right at me. I froze, looking away. She stamped one time and looked over her shoulder down the hill. Over the sound of my heart pounding, I could just barely make out the sounds of another deer walking through the leaves. About 5 yards behind her, a large buck appeared. Now my heart started to really pound. He was the biggest buck I had ever seen while hunting. And he was within range. But this doe cannot decide if I am a threat or not, and I am frozen, praying she calms down so I can raise my rifle. The buck is just standing there, watching her and scratching his sides with his back legs. The doe finally calms enough to graze past me until she is about 15 yards in front of me. The buck slowly followed her. I began to raise my rifle... And the wind shifted. From me. To the doe. She panicked and tore off up the hill from me with the buck steadily following her. It took me meh-ing at the buck twice before he would stop. I put the cross hairs on him, squeezed the trigger, and froze. He bucked, turned right, and disappeared over the ridge of the hill. I could hear shuffling in the leaves, and I heard the doe blow. Then nothing. Oh my God. Did I miss? How could I miss? He was under 100 yards in front of me. I couldn't have missed. I wish my heart would slow down. I cleared my rifle and picked up my cell phone. My husband, who had been hunting at the bottom of the hill from me, texted, "Please tell me that was you." I replied, "I just shot a buck." He told me to stay put and made his way to me. I directed him to where the deer had been standing when I shot. He found a blood trail, and the relief that washed through me was enough to make me want to cry. Twenty yards later, we found him. He wasn't as big as I had originally thought. Why do bucks always look bigger from a tree stand? I am so very happy and proud and thankful for this 7 point. To date, he is the biggest buck I have ever brought down.
