About 15 minutes after daylight I heard the chatter. I reached for my quiet wood call and gave a few soft nagging quacks and a low feeding chuckle. I could see them now , a flock of 8 mallards. They were passing strait away. I gave them a little more aggressive sequence. They immediately banked and locked up. They tried to drop into the far corner of the pond but I talked them off the water. They were hard to see below the tree line but the subtle flickers of light off their wings was enough to keep tabs on them. They cruised right at us like cargo planes and deployed their gear at 15 yards. Only then did I swing my gun. Three shots rang out and three splashes answered. My buddies gun had malfunctioned. Later on six more birds gave us a look and I told them what they wanted to hear. Once again the birds were sucked in to the kill hole in the decoys. Two shots rang out and two splashes. My buddies gun fired this time but did not cycle. That was the last group of the morning but a fine day nonetheless.
