He’s back! This buck. He’s seven seasons in the making. I’ve learned some in that time. He’s a young one that just keeps coming around. I passed on him once this year because it wasn’t a shot I was comfortable with. Just before last light, he came walking down the gun lane we have carved out through the woods. It gives us 400yds of shooting from the house, and makes a great highway for the deer. My ladder stand is just about 18 yds east of it, in a little split maple tree. He was walking south, and stopped to turn back up the trail giving me a quartering away shot. I had 2 choices: let him walk again and see who he turned back to look at, or take the shot. You can see which I chose. At 18 yards, I took the shot. Turns out, it was a pretty good shot. I hit his liver, lungs, and atria, with the arrow exiting inside his right leg. It wasn’t quite a complete pass through. The fletchings kept it inside his leg. Sitting in the stand, I thought I heard hime pile up and thought I saw him lay down. I definitely heard his last three rasping wheezes, but. There was this doe stomping around under me making it very hard for me to be certain, so I was kind of panicking. Turns out, he was exactly where he was supposed to be, 30 yds from where I shot him. He’ll be one for the memory book for sure.
