Right when we setup camp, a couple of guys were walking up the trail and came over to us. Eli and his brother Ben recognized my truck and ended up being avid listeners of the East Meets West Hunt podcast. We chatted for awhile and they told us they found Merriam Gobblers over 3 miles back in from the parking area, and said they would be leaving in a few days if we wanted to hunt them while the bear hunting was slow in the mornings. I drove out to buy my Turkey tag and Kurt already had all of his stuff. Huge thanks to these guys!

On day 3, once Eli and his brother left, we hiked back in to look for a gobbler for Kurt prior to him having to go back to work. Just before 11 am, Kurt heard a gobble off in the distance. I could’ve swore it was a crow, but he was right. Long story short, Kurt and Justin Mueller went out ahead of me while I stayed back to call. In under 15 minutes, we had this big Tom running in where Kurt made the shot with my Grandpa’s old Remington 870. 

He packed the Turkey back to camp where we cooked breakfast, had a celebratory Big Truck Farms and Brewery beer, and just enjoyed the day for awhile. 

This was the first time I had ever seen a Merriams personally and Kurt’s third one he’s killed since he moved out west. 

This was one of the most beautiful places I had ever Turkey hunted before!
