August is National Shooting Sports Month

August is National Shooting Sports Month
August 17, 2018

As the orange disk floated through the air, I pulled the trigger and watched as it turned to dust. I was standing on the line with four other participants, ranging in age from 18 to 70. We were enjoying a sport that dates back to the 1700’s, trap shooting.

It was my first time, and it showed, as I only connected on 9 more of the 25 moving targets that I would take aim at, for a score of 10. Being it was my first time shooting trap, and a few years since I last picked up my Mossberg 9200, I wasn’t surprised with my total. I had fun nonetheless, and hopefully I’ll get better the more I shoot.

That is what’s great about going to the local sportsmen’s club or shooting range, at any given time you have the chance to meet people of all ages and from many walks of life, enjoying the excitement of sending a few rounds down range.
“Take someone that has never been shooting before, and use the time to connect with them, to show them what shooting can be about, and have fun in the process.”

August is National Shooting Sports Month and it is the perfect time and opportunity to visit your local shooting range. What better way to spend time with your family and friends than to send a few rounds down range. Use your time at the range to teach your kids about gun safety and how to properly handle a firearm. And be sure to get your rifle sighted.

The word “gun” can bring up so many emotions, especially negative emotions, for some people. It can be a polarizing topic, but it does not have to be. Use National Shooting Sports Month to put to rest the stigma that can be associated with guns.
Take someone that has never been shooting before, and use the time to connect with them, to show them what shooting can be about, and have fun in the process.
So grab your range bag, your rifle, shotgun or pistol, and a few boxes of ammo and head to your local range. You’ll be glad that you did.
